Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IMOC PAS) was established in September 2010 as a result of a merging of two renowned research institutions – the Research Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology PAS and the Centre for Studies on Non-European Countries PAS. Consequently, the Institute continues research projects launched by both Centres and is cooperating with scientific institutions around the world.

The Institute has conducted and still conducts important archaeological missions in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia. It has established from many years strong and durable relationships with prestigious scientific institutions all over the world, e.g. the German Archaeological Institute (Cairo, DAIK), the French Institute of oriental archaeology (Cairo, IFAO), various universities (e.g. Berlin, Mainz, Heidelberg, Khartum) and museums (e.g. British Museum, Royal Ontario Museum). Many scientific projects financed by the NCN (National Science Center) and by other agencies, have been and will be carried out at the institute, such as those directed by Prof. Karol Myśliwiec, Prof. Bogdan Żurawski, prof. IMOC PAS Teodozja Rzeuska, Dr Edyta Marzec, Dr Massimiliano Nuzzolo, Dr Zuzanna Wygnańska and Dr Maria Carmela Gatto.

IMOC is publishing and co-publishing several scientific journals and book series presenting research results of its projects and being platforms for a wide academic discussion. The institute is also an organiser and co-organiser of numerous scientific conferences and workshops.
